      Understanding Leukemia and Leukemia Treatment

Leukemia is the name for several types of cancer that form in the blood and bone marrow, which is the spongy tissue inside bone where blood cells are made. Normally, bone marrow produces white blood cells, or leukocytes, to fight infection and protect the body against invaders. Leukemia is caused by the rapid production of abnormal white blood cells, which are ineffective and interfere with bone marrow’s ability to make red blood cells and platelets.

What Are the Types of Leukemia?

The four major types of leukemia are:

      • Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL)
      • Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL)
      • Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML)
      • Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML)

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia is the most common form of leukemia. Acute lymphocytic leukemia and acute myelogenous leukemia are more common in children, while acute myelogenous leukemia and chronic lymphocytic leukemia are more common in adults. Doctors select treatment regimens based on the type of leukemia a patient has. For example, a chronic lymphocytic leukemia treatment plan will likely be different from a recommended regimen for acute myelogenous leukemia.

Leukemia Treatment: What Are the Options?

Leukemia treatment can take several forms, including:

      • Chemotherapy: A general term for drugs that kill cancer cells and prevent them from spreading.
      • Targeted therapy: Medications that take aim at genetic mutations, proteins, and other factors specific to a given cancer.
      • Leukapheresis: Removal of some blood cells, which is sometimes performed prior to chemotherapy.
      • Bone marrow transplants: In this procedure, a patient receives an infusion of healthy blood-forming stem cells.
      • Radiation therapy: The use of intense, focused beams of energy to kill cancer cells, which may be used in some cases.
      • Watchful waiting: Some forms of leukemia grow slowly, so patients may only be monitored with various tests until the cancer begins to worsen, at which time treatment can be initiated.

We reached out to Massive Bio for a second opinion regarding my Mothers breast cancer diagnosis. Massive Bio provided us with alternative treatment options which were clinically proven to be more effective and with less side effects than the standard level of care our oncologist suggested. Their team was quick to respond, extremely knowledgeable, answered all of our questions. They continue to follow her case, gladly reviewing any new scans and results. We are so grateful for the time and effort they continue to put into her case. Thank you Massive Bio for giving us hope again!
